POSTAL REFORM: PLEASE CALL/EMAIL YOUR REPRESENTATIVE AND SENATORS NOW
Postal reform remains at a critical juncture. Now is the time you can help by contacting your Senators. Why now? The House approved HR 22 on July 27 by a vote of 410-20. S 662 was approved by the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee earlier in July 15 – 1, and must be brought to the Senate Floor in the Fall or chances for success may diminish to the vanishing point. S 662, like HR 22, is in the interest of the mailing community generally, and of NPPC specifically. We need to ensure that Senators beyond the Committee, and particularly the leadership, understand: how vital a healthy USPS is to the nation, its economy overall, and specific businesses, nonprofits and other organizations and the general public; and how urgent it is to ensure that the bills be given time for a vote on the floors and approved.
Whether it is favorably resolving the CSRS escrow and military service pension issues, flexibility in rates with a CPI “hard cap” on increases, worksharing discounts or service standards, these bills are helpful to NPPC members’ interests. While neither bill is perfect, and further improvement will be sought should the Senate join the House in passing its version and go into conference to reconcile differences, the advantages far outweigh the detriments at this point.
So, you can help by communicating with your Members. An easy, state-of-the-art way to do this has been generously developed and offered by International Paper. It provides brief background information on the postal reform issues as well as a tool that will generate electronic communications to specific US Representatives and Senators based on their zip codes.
